Sustainable by Design Student Award
1.Price
Group “Urban energy and resource networks” (L´Aquila): Paola Andreozzi, Adelheid Henkel, Kerstin Janssen, Ole Storjohann
A 1st price for the perfect analysis of a “hard core topic” – urban energy cycles. Energy never gets lost. It just changes. And for the high actuality and the political importance of the selected topic for the region. This project should be developed further. For the region of L´Aquila but also for a more resource-sufficient future for all of us.
Group “Public and Private Spaces in the City” (Copenhagen): Bianca Maria Di Cola, Ting Liu, Frederike Meier, Eliska Stuchlá
A 1st price for a coherent process to develop with simple but surprising elements a long lasting and joyfull living space, connecting two parts of a well kept urban system. And for the human and touristic approach to public and private activities in a condensed context.
Honorable mention
Group “Social and Cultural Infrastructure” (Copenhagen): Erling Christoffer Forfang, Camilla Grappelli , Lena Pipkorn, Christian Zilisch
An honorable mention for the light impact on the sensitive infrastructure of the bay and the urban context. The intervention is a missing link between the two city areas and will help the developed area to be requalified. And for the intelligent use of renewable energies and recycled elements.
The Jury thanks the students for the creative but responsible work during an intensive week.
The 5th day of the UIA Open Forum Strategies-Series dedicated to“Vernacular & Low-Cost Architecture” was a real highlight. After the Lectures from “Global Award for Sustainable Architecture”-Founder Jana Revedin about “Innovation and transmission” and “Tegnestuen Vandkusten”-Partner Søren Nielsen on “Industrial Systems and Architectural concepts”, Aga Khan Award-Winner Anna Heringer spoke “On Sustaining Beauty - local solutions for global challenges”. In addition to the Lectures two short films about the Global Awards Laureates Andrew Frear/ Rural Studios and Alejandro Aravena were presented. Completed was the evening with a discussion moderated by Jana Revedin. Participants were besides the lecturers Marie-Hélène Contal, Vice-director of the French Institute of Architecture, and members of the UIA Region I Council as Antonio Riverso, Mauro Latini and UIA Vice-president Albert Dubler.
As a conclusion of the strategies, topics and projects that were discussed during the whole weak, this last evening underlined and stressed, that a holistic approach in Architecture named “Sustainable by Design” is not only meaningful and necessary to contribute to our future social, cultural, economical and ecological challenges. It can also be an inspiring and fascinating contribution to the development of architecture as a discipline.

Final Jury Session
The 4th day of the UIA Open Forum stood under the headline “Climate and Architecture. The students and teachers of the Forum took part in the The Nantes Symposium: Climate and Architecture – Towards an Atmospheric Architecture with the speakers Sou Fujimoto (Tokyo), David Gissen (San Francisco), Sean Lally (Chicago), Juergen Mayer H. (Berlin), Akos Moravansky (ETH Zurich) and Henry Urbach (San Francisco). Parallel to the symposium the student work continued with guest critics by Georges Billot (France) and Antonio Riverso (Italy). For the students there is only left one day (and one night) to finish there work. Tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. the projects will be presented by the students to an international jury. The presentation will be an public event.
Intense discussions between team members and critics.
At wednesday the students had a presentation and discussion with the teacher of the four universities about their projects. Now they only have two day to finish their ideas.
The general idea of the workshop is that each of the student team would focus on one of the topics relevant for the sustainable developement of the city. The different approaches shows the complexity of the challenge to design a sustainable city structure and the overall discussion of all topics give the students an holistic understanding.
